A $1 billion, 73-story skyscraper coming to downtown Los Angeles could be the tallest building in the West Coast.
The Wilshire Grand by developer Korean Air will include a 900-room hotel, restaurants, retail, 30 floors of office space and a top recreational floor with an infinity pool.
The project, designed by Los Angeles-based firm AC Martin Partners, will rise 1,100 feet with its spire, beating out the city’s current tallest building, the 1,018-foot US Bank. The 50-foot glass section, enforced with steel trusses, will wrap the top deck.
Design-wise, the Wilshire Grand will be bucking tradition as the first modern downtown tower without a flat roof. A 1974 fire safety ordinance dictates that buildings must have flat roofs to allow for helicopter rescues, but AC Martin was able to find a workaround to keep the building’s unique sail-shaped topper.
