This is how you hide ugly urban structures

All cities have eyesores like electric boxes, public washrooms and garbage bins, but how does one beautify these unsightly structures?

You hire someone like Amsterdam-based artist Roeland Otten, who found a way to make these urban buildings blend into their environment.

Pictured above and animated below is Otten’s “Transformation House,” a concrete electrical substation turned optical illusion.

In another example of his work, Otten uses mosaic tiles to give a utility box a pleasing pixelated look.

Of course, the concept of livening up bland public structures is not new. The City of Vancouver, for example, commissioned art work for many of its electrical boxes and utility substations.
